Due to a steady increase in ridership on Sounder South and anticipated growth, Sound Transit embarked upon the Sounder South Access Improvement Project, with the goal of not only expanding capacity, but also improving the rider experience at Puyallup, Sumner, Kent and Auburn stations. The Kent Station Parking & Access Improvement project will include a new 465 stall parking structure, 39 stall on-grade parking lot and Metro bus layover facility.

The team of HNTB and Watry Design, Inc. are providing procurement, preconstruction, design and construction management services for the garage, including the preparation of bridging documents and RFP development. As the original garage design called for the realignment of Railroad Avenue, Watry Design prepared alternate concepts that would avoid shifting the roadway, resulting in a narrower, 4-level structure instead of a 3-level garage.

The garage will feature an arrival plaza and public art by RYAN! Feddersen, a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. Brick work on the lower-level fits within the character of the city’s Downtown Overlay District. A protective canopy will protect riders from the weather as they travel to the train platform. The Metro bus facility will provide EV charging infrastructure for 12 buses and a comfort station building for bus drivers.

The Watry Design team is also serving as design manager for the Auburn and Sumner Station Parking & Access Improvement projects, and provided procurement and design support for the Puyallup Station Garage.
