The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center opened its new outpatient center to patients on March 27th, adding new imaging suites and a fully-automated parking structure to the South Lake Union campus in Seattle. The 160-stall parking garage was designed with patient care in mind, including bringing in cancer patients such as cancer survivor Jason Johnson, who worked with the design team.
The fully-automated system, delivered by Harding Steel utilizing a WÖHR system, allows patients to drop their vehicles off with a valet attendant and continue to their appointments with minimal stress. Valets then drive the vehicle into the automated system via a transfer cabin, which selects an open spot and stores the car until it is needed again.
“When patients come in for their appointments, parking is one of those things that just adds additional stress to the day,” said Terry McDonnell, VP & Chief Nursing Officer for the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. “So we landed on our auto park facility so that we could eliminate that component of the stressful experience for our patients.”
Watry Design worked with ZGF Architects and Fred Hutch to evaluate and provide final specifications for the automated parking system.
