The Cannery Row district of downtown Monterey had a severe parking shortage. In addition, there are complex design requirements for the protection of the historical district. Pacific Hotel Management needed a creative solution to meet the growing parking needs of the company's two-hotel development. The available location for the proposed parking structure was long and narrow while zoning limited the building's height and the project's budget ruled out the excavation necessary for below grade parking.
The final design blends in beautifully with the atmosphere and visual vocabulary of the historic Cannery Row district and reduces the building's mass to an appropriate context. The Watry Design team provided the necessary stall count by incorporating mechanical parking lifts on two floors. These lifts allow valets to vertically stack two cars in a space that normally accommodates a single car.
