A portion of a parking deck, just outside the entrance of the attached 15-story airport hotel, experienced a partial collapse. The damaged area was immediately shored and evaluated by a local engineer who recommended that it be demolished and rebuilt. Recognized as experts in post-tensioned concrete parking structures, Watry Design was consulted and provided an innovative design to repair the deck while allowing the day-to-day hotel operations to continue. Watry identified the cause of the failure, worked with the hotel and contractor to stage the repair work around hotel activities and established recommendations to prevent a recurrence.

The repair work included demolition and reconstruction of the damaged post-tensioned concrete slab. Installation of new pile foundations were required at one location where a new column was added to support the porte cochere. Post-tensioning tendons were removed and replaced in the damaged section. Portions of the deck and the columns below the deck were strengthened using a Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) strengthening system. This system allowed the rehabilitation of the remaining portions of the deck to occur while the hotel remained in service.

A waterproof traffic membrane was installed over the parking deck and landscaping was replaced.
